In my opinion, 32-bit operating systems have been nice .... the future disappear from the market a few years scratch

I'm running on 64bit linux (Ubuntu - someone says it's not linux Smile ) and Windows 7 32bit.

You could try http://chakra-project.org/

Yes, BSD-s are interesting. You've seen Dragonfly BSD?

This is good news for FreeBSD.

3 December: The NVIDIA Corporation releases an initial BETA version of NVIDIA 195.22 FreeBSD graphics drivers for both i386 and amd64 architectures. The drivers support recent versions of the FreeBSD operating system, i.e. 7.2-STABLE and 8.0-RELEASE and provide support for features like SLI, improved compatibility and performance, especially on systems with 4GB or more of RAM. This marks the first driver release for amd64, as it was previously available only for i386 architecture. Please see the original announcement for more information.

PostSubject: Re: linux 32bit or 64bit?   linux 32bit or 64bit? EmptyThu Dec 10, 2009 6:28 am

I use FreeBSD since quite some time now. Anyone interested in the major differences to Linux should take a look at →this article←, although a little outdated and mainly referring to FreeBSD it explains quite a lot.

I still prefer Linux after all, propably because I'm more of an anarchist than an orthodox. But it's interesting and inspiring to work on both and compare the differences, I also get lots of ideas when working with other unixes / unixoid systems like Solaris, HP/UX, Aix... it's interesting to see how others solve certain things.

Um by the way... you guys realize that using a 64bit-system only has advantages when using processes that need more than 4GB of RAM? And I mean a *single* process. Anything below can be handled by 32bitters as well (pae-Kernels can handle 64GB of RAM and *up to* 4GB per process - I'm pretty sure I never ever had such a process running on any of my home-desktop-systems),

64bit is the future, though. Only it's very unlikely that users will benefit from it *today*.

Thanks Sophie for this article.
Do you play on FreeBSD? Is it good for nexuiz? Smile

And no, I disagree on your point about 64bit systems. Linux x86_64 is faster, quicker and more responsive that 32bit one. I know that from experience. I used Arch Linux 32 bit and then I switched on 64.
Anyway.... Unix rules.

There are many *many* parameters which manage speed, a 64bit-architecture on *todays* home-desktops is unlikely to be one of them. For more info on that read →this article, it shows you that almost any software is still optimized for 32bit-environments. A software written explicitely for 64bitters would have a better performance, though. Would!

I haven't tried to compile Nexuiz on BSD yet, I suppose that'd be quite an ordeal - as far as I know there's no native prebuild version for it.
