NK server issues

If u have any suggestions about any improvements to our new server just post it here. If it isn't technical like u just want me to add new map - just post what u want. If it is more technical like egz. it will be good if players can vote for tdm, and u know how to do it, post also technical info about how to achieve what u want to be done.

I'm still linux noob and I don't know much about Nexuiz technical aspects (structure, configuration, modifications or scripting) so technical support will be apreciated.

I have also some ideas of improvements which by now can't be made cause of lack of knowledge. So I also will post it here.


1. How to remove powerups? I tried:

g_powerup_shield 0
g_powerup_strenght 0
g_powerup_superhealth 0

But it takes no effect.

2. How to configure respawn protection? Any setting about respawning I founded (and set) till now was:

g_respawn_delay 0.5
g_spawnshieldtime 0.5

But this only set that u can't be killed during 0.5s from the respawn. I think the best solution is that for some time after respawn if u will be fragged no point will be added to fragger (info about spawnfrag will be shown to him) and from the other hand during some time after respawn if u frag anybody it would also be a spawnfrag and no point should be added. I don't like an idea of spawn shield, do u?. But I dunno how to configure respawn protection the way I think is better.

3. How to enable some more complex votes - like 1on1 2on2 3on3 voting?
4. How to change (or add if empty) map picture on the maps choice screen?

Yes we have. And we had them week ago and... even couple months ago

Now we have:
DM 2.5.1 - I don't know who provide it.
1on1 2.5.2 - provided by BFG
DM 2.5.2 - released two days ago and provided by me

You haven't notice that we have servers coz they r empty most of the time coz of ping. BFG's server is his home PC - not best connection and location (UK). DM 2.5.1 I noticed just 2 days ago when I searched for my server. I don't know nothing about it.

My server will be the best of we have till now coz it is classical server rented from hosting company, located in their data center. But still I'm not fully satisfied coz for most of NK's it will be probably little worse than PK because it is located in France.

BTW I have noticed one strange behaviour - for me, my server is frequently higher on servers list than all PKs servers (I have servers list allways orderer by ping). It seems to have better connection parameters than PKs but when I'm inside I see that my and others ping is not very good quite often. Can it be possible one of this pings is very often far away from real value? Is shown ping dependent of any server configuration settings?

I configured server to multi gametype mode. Now it is DM server with votable 1on1, 2on2, 3on3 modes. To vote for another mode:

vcall 1on1
vcall 2on2
vcall 3on3
vcall dm - return to DM mode. This mode is default but don't return automatically so if u change mode please let the last player on server make this call before exit.

I was able to improve significantly server ping only by server configuration. SO now many players can have better ping even than on PK. Still I don't know how to create PK-like spawnfrag protection. Its probably independent of server configuration and needs to interfere much deeper in Nexuiz structure (maybe Iron can help me).

So I think our server slowly become profesional. Some of us tested it yesterday - because of lags on PK server part of NK vs PROPHETS match took part on our server. And I think everybody was satisfied. But I'm pretty sure for long time it will become empty most of the time because it take lot of time since people found out that there is at least one good (ours) DM server except PK. If I do something I would like it has any purpose. So till it won't be very popular we can arrange NKs training meetings - once a week at specific day and time all NKs who wants and can be on server will meet to train chosen gametype and share game tips with each others.

My proposal of details:

1. Ones chosen and constant days of the week creating a cycle, egz:

1st week - Thursday
2nd week - Friday
3rd week - Sathurday
4th week - Thursday
5th week - Friday
etc.

It spare us a mess of choosing it from week to week - "I can of Friday; I can on Sunday; Please not the weekend! etc." Everybody who can - join. If there will be too less ppl just simply there won't be a meeting this week.

2. Constant time
3. One gametype per meeting.

So finaly my exact proposal for 3 incoming weeks will be:
27.05.2010 21:00 gametype: DM
04.06.2010 21:00 gametype: TDM (2on2, 3on3)
12.06.2010 21:00 gametype: 1on1

One thing can be a problem. I always have to have at least enought time to restart server and make it not public. I don't think it will be allways possible so I have one solution: I will make a copy of the server - it will be allways hidden. I think there won't be any problems and my server hardware can handle even full both servers.

today i had some nice games with Lucy on your new server.

Ping was good, lag happened just once and i'm pretty sure it's due to my internet connection, not the server thing.

We were playing 1on1 (Lucy showed some power and logged as a MASTER )
It was great, i took hard pawnage on farewell (it was about 30:10 for Lucy... She's excellent on some maps, really)

Generally, everything works fine, you could think about this spawn protection, what Anal mentioned some posts before.
You could also think about typefragging maybe. I mean so typefrag wouldn't give you a point. But maybe you did? I wasn't testing it:P

Anyway, really good job and really nice server:)

Yes, pk-like spawn protection needs to be applied to the server. This idea about typefragging is also good (but probably very hard to achive by me). Now I'm trying to apply first part. But simple things has ended. I need to download Nexuiz source code, apply mods and compile it. Temporary impossible coz my linux server is... f*cked up. To made possible to compile Nexuiz I need about 100 new packets. And I can't download any - apt-get can't connect ubuntu repositories. Why I don't know - it worked fine, now it doesn't work, it doesn't see proper adress. So I'm grounded I dunno for how long.

Yes u have to. When u change gametype u load new configuration for the server. The is no possibility to load the old one (dm) automatically.

It is a very nice server, but could you shorten the respawn time? It is frustrating having to wait three or four seconds to get back in the game.

Respawn time is set to 1sec

Really? Probably I'm exaggerating. According to the onscreen clock it takes 2 seconds, though it can seem longer. Normally, I get fragged, I mouseclick(maybe twice), and I'm back. Here I mouseclick a couple of times, and still have to wait. Its a minor issue, but it can seem a big deal near the end of DM.

Could there be anything else slowing it?
Can it be reduced to less than 1 sec?

I dunno what can slowing respawn. If there were many ppl feeling the same I would suppose it could be wrong server configuration. But it seems u r alone. I can change respawn time to 0.8 sec but not less. Sometimes u don't want to respawn instantly. If it would be shorter you don't make it to release mouse button and it would work similiar to autorespawn.

I've added some votes to our server. So now:

There is available 4on4 mode.

I added an control for number of BOTs and their skills. So now u don't need to change mode to 1on1 when u need to get rid of annoying (for some ppl) third BOT. Or if u want train with large number of BOTs it is also available. Calls u can use:

Minimal amount of players (filled by bots if there isn't enough ppl):

BOTs skills:
